  6. System Requirements
  7. -------------------
  8.  
  9. The Inkutils run on any PC with DOS 3.30 (or later) or Windows 95, and 256K
  10. of available DOS memory. Approximately 360K of free disk space is required
  11. for installation.
  12.  
  13. Installation
  14. ------------
  15.  
  16. To install the Inkutils, type d:INSTALL where d: is the drive (and, if
  17. appropriate, the directory) with the install program, then follow the on-
  18. screen prompts. After a successful installation, you will need to add the
  19. Inkutils directory to your PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  20.  
  21. Once the Inkutils are installed, type INKUTILS to view the user guide at
  22. any time. All of the Inkutils support the /? and /HELP command line switches
  23. to display help on the Inkutil that has been run.
  24.  
  25. The file WHATSNEW.TXT describes the new features in this version. A full
  26. revision history is included in the Inkutils user guide.

  28. Description of the Inkutils
  29. ---------------------------

  31. The Inkutils are a suite of 11 DOS/Win95 DOS utilities:
  32.  
  33.     * DEDIT - Description Editor
  34.  
  35.       A full-screen 4DOS/NDOS/TakeCommand file description editor with
  36.       mouse support and many unique features. DEDIT automatically scans
  37.       your 4DOS/NDOS.INI file for ColorDir and other settings, so that
  38.       it uses the same configuration you're already using. DEDIT can
  39.       also import file lists into the file descriptions. It also allows
  40.       short (8.3) filenames to be described with their Win95 long
  41.       filename equivalents, so even if you're under plain DOS, you can
  42.       still see the long filenames.

  44.     * CC - Cache Control
  45.  
  46.       A control panel for the SmartDrv (or any compatible) disk cache.
  47.       You can change cache settings by intuitive point and clicking
  48.       rather than using the less friendly command line options. CC is
  49.       also DoubleSpace and DriveSpace aware.
  50.  
  51.     * EE - Evaluate Expression
  52.  
  53.       A flexible calculator than can be used three ways: Command line
  54.       calculator, Desktop calculator or TSR popup calculator. The TSR
  55.       calculator can be loaded in as little as 1.5K of DOS memory. EE
  56.       can perform such functions as grabbing numbers from the screen,
  57.       putting numbers back in to a document (by sending them back
  58.       through the keyboard!), and much more.

  60.     * DD - Delete Directory
  61.  
  62.       Allows a directory (and its contents) to be deleted. Much more
  63.       friendly than DELTREE. DD displays directory summaries before
  64.       deleting. Allows directories to be 'protected' which marks them
  65.       as read-only and prevents DD from being able to delete them
  66.       until they are 'unprotected'. DD supports Windows 95 long file
  67.       names.

  69.     * CE - Critical Error
  70.  
  71.       Replaces the standard "Retry, Ignore, Fail or Abort" message
  72.       with a popup window that gives much more information on the error
  73.       that has occurred. Can be loaded in as little as 900 bytes of
  74.       DOS memory, and, as with all the Inkutils, CE is fully compatible
  75.       with 4DOS and NDOS. CE also works in a DOS shell under Windows 3.x
  76.       or Windows 95.

  78.     * TM - Text Mode
  79.  
  80.       Allows various text modes (including any VESA text mode that
  81.       your video card supports) to be selected. With TM you can select
  82.       the largest text mode available on your machine automatically, list
  83.       available VESA text modes and select keyboard key repeat rates.
  84.       It's ideal for use in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  86.     * LE - List Executables
  87.  
  88.       Displays only the executable files (EXE, COM, BAT and, if you're
  89.       using 4DOS or NDOS, BTM) in the current or specified directory.
  90.       No more searching through long directory listings to find the
  91.       program to run! LE supports Windows 95 long filenames.
  92.  
  93.     * MCD - Make and Change Directory
  94.  
  95.       Performs the DOS commands MD and CD in one go. MCD can also
  96.       create multiple directories in one go (e.g. MCD \one\two\three will
  97.       create the directories \ONE, \one\TWO and \one\two\THREE ). It
  98.       can also protect directories, so that Delete Directory cannot
  99.       delete them. MCD supports Windows 95 long filenames.
  100.  
  101.     * FM - Fast Mouse
  102.  
  103.       Reduces the time taken for a program to reset the mouse. FM
  104.       can reduce the time taken for some programs to start up by
  105.       converting all slow hardware mouse resets to quick software
  106.       resets. Try it with the DOS editor, EDIT. 4DOS users will find
  107.       that it dramatically speeds up its on-line help.
  108.  
  109.     * DZ - Divide by Zero
  110.  
  111.       Intercepts any "Divide overflow" errors. If you are having such
  112.       problems, then DZ will display the name of the program that has
  113.       created the error and allows you to continue the program, rather
  114.       than automatically terminating it (which is the default behaviour
  115.       of DOS).

  117.     * IP - Inkutils Present
  118.       Provides a quick and easy way to see at once which TSR programs
  119.       from the Inkutils are currently resident in memory.
  120.

  123.       A friendly, menu driven user guide covering each Inkutil with
  124.       full instructions and examples.

  127. Shareware
  128. ---------

  130. The Inkutils are shareware, but are not limited or crippled in any way,
  131. so that a full evaluation may be made of them. Please support the shareware
  132. concept and register if you continue to use them.
  133.  
  134. When you register the Inkutils, you will recieve a disk of the latest
  135. registered version, plus you will be notified about any updates or new
  136. versions in the future. Registering also encourages the author to continue
  137. to update this program and develop new ones.

  140. in the Inkutils user guide, so there's no excuse! (Type INKUTILS at the
  141. command prompt to view the user guide).

  165. The Inkutils are normally dispatched on 3.5 inch disks, but 5.25 inch
  166. disks can be sent instead, on request, but please indicate the disk
  167. capacity.

  170. as the files are not modified in any way. Please distribute the INSTALL
  171. package, rather than the individual Inkutils files.
